Samoan: SILI: 1a. to be the best 1b. to stick in, like a pen (or stylus!) 1c. surpassing, exceeding


Tongan: HILI: to go past; to go beyond


Hawaiian: HILI: 1a. To turn aside, deviate, miss the way, wander, stray. 1b. Bark used in dyeing, as hili kukui, hili kōlea, hili noni; the dark-brown dye made from this bark; a tapa dyed with hili; to dye with hili.


HILIHILI: dark red or brown (figuratively: to be wealthy); this ties in the SILI / HILI morpheme complex with the Egyptian [wsr] / [wsri]. Difficult to manufacture manual labor material culture items (taonga, measina, Yapese money wheels, etc.) represent wealth.
